What is the metal fabrication process? | Ms Life

Metal is used in a wide range of products, it is the stabilizing element that makes our daily lives easier. The process of converting raw materials to finished shapes ready for assembly is called metal fabrication. It involves the following steps.

Cutting

Cutting is the most commonly used metal fabrication process, where sheets are separated into two, three, or four parts. Many times freshly prepared sheet is used for cutting. Cuts are executed on a various range of machinery, from lasers and plasma torches to more elaborate, high-tech pieces of machinery.

Folding

Folding is one of the most complicated processes of metal fabrication, where metal is subjected to folding at a certain degree of angle. The intent is to make it more or less blunt. But folding can only be made possible in selected high-tech facilities as it involves a complex process. Many times, the joining of two metals is a more viable option.

Welding

The process of joining separate metal parts is called welding. It is the most popular metal fabrication process. The parts used could be sheets, bars, or anything in metal. Various methods and tool types make welding possible.

Machining

The process of removing portions from pieces of metals is known as machining. A metal drill can also be classified as a machining tool.

Punching

Punching refers to forming holes in a piece of metal. The process consists of punching, where metal is placed under a die and punched by a drill.

Shearing

Shearing involves the process of subjecting long cuts to a metal sheet. It is done in three ways, vertical, horizontal, and over the edge (like paper cutters). Though it is commonly used to trim the edges, it can be done anywhere on the surface.

Stamping

The process of raising the metal surface without penetrating is called stamping. It is used to create shapes, images, or letters.

Casting

In this process, molten metal is poured into molds to solidify and obtain the desired form. The most commonly used metals for casting are steel, iron, gold, copper, silver, and magnesium. These were some of the majorly important steps in the metal fabrication process.
